Tablet versus phone: Depth perception in handheld augmented reality

Judging how far away virtual objects are is central to handheld AR, yet exocentric depth perception — judging distances between objects rather than to oneself — had not been studied in AR. This paper is the first in the AR domain to examine both the influence of different handheld displays and exocentric depth perception, comparing tablets against phones. Its findings inform which form factor better supports accurate spatial understanding in mobile AR.
