Exploration of an EEG-Based Cognitively Adaptive Training System in Virtual Reality

Most VR training does not adapt to how hard the trainee's mind is actually working. This paper explores a system that reads task-related alpha activity from a 32-channel mobile EEG in real time and adjusts task difficulty to keep the user optimally challenged. Across 14 participants and 20 increasingly complex levels, brain activity changed significantly with task complexity even though response time did not — suggesting the brain compensates for higher load without a visible drop in visuomotor performance.
