Evaluating depth perception of photorealistic mixed reality visualizations for occluded objects in outdoor environments

Revealing hidden objects outdoors in mixed reality only helps if people can judge how far away those objects are. This paper evaluates far-field depth perception in a handheld outdoor setting using two photorealistic visualisations of occluded objects — X-ray and Melt — with and without an added depth cue. It tests which rendering choices help users perceive the true position of things they cannot directly see.
